TMK will invest RUB 1.5 billion to increase its water recycling ratio to 98%

TMK plans to invest RUB 1.5 billion over the next three years in increasing its water recycling ratio to 98% and about RUB 1 billion in further reducing waste generation, said Vyacheslav Popkov, TMK’s First Deputy CEO for Special Projects, at the 4th Industrial Ecology: New Challenges and Future Standards annual conference.

Speaking at the Industry’s Environmental Transformation. Challenges 2030 plenary session, Vyacheslav Popkov emphasized that TMK’s ambitious plant modernization program and its transition to electric arc furnace operations enabled a 60% decrease in greenhouse gas emissions, halved wastewater discharge due to a recirculating water supply system, and reduced production waste by 40%.

Vyacheslav Popkov said: “However, we are not complacent. The Company is now implementing a comprehensive three-year program to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 8%, with costs at about RUB 3 billion. The expected impact will be driven, in particular, by upgrading the existing gas-cleaning units and switching to advanced energy-saving technologies for lighting and powering production equipment”.

TMK is also running an emissions inventory and preparing for the verification of its greenhouse gas emission declarations to international standards, scheduled for Q1 2022.

“Our plans also include upgrades to the water supply system. Approximately RUB 1.5 billion will be invested to further increase our water recycling ratio. At the moment, it averages about 96% across TMK, and our three-year ambition is to achieve 98%, thus minimizing water consumption and discharge of treated wastewater. Another focus area is waste management. Investment in stepping up recycling will total about RUB 1 billion over the same period,” said Vyacheslav Popkov.

He said that the plant project to manufacture stainless steel flat-rolled products, currently under construction in Volzhsky, the Volgograd Region, will also incorporate the latest environmental standards.

“We will leverage the best available technology and engage the world’s leading equipment suppliers. They will be asked to demonstrate that their technology solutions meet both Russian and international standards,” emphasized Vyacheslav Popkov.
