TMK shares its ESG practices at SPIEF 2021

TMK has long embedded sustainability across its operations, investing in environmental performance, as well as occupational safety, helping its people grow and promoting the development regions where it operates. Igor Korytko, CEO of TMK, shared these successes at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF 2021).

“The ESG agenda has been, and continues to be, at the heart of TMK’s operations. Looking at environmental safety, we have completely modernized all company enterprises over the past 15 years, and today our plants use best available technologies, in particular, they make steel by recycling scrap metal in electric arc furnaces (EAFs) – this method currently has the lowest carbon footprint of all steelmaking methods. We are also a leader in adopting new technologies at our production operations. A good number of our facilities are the most modern in Europe,” explained Igor Korytko during the SPIEF session dedicated to the ESG transformation of corporate strategies.

He stressed that TMK’s greatest asset is its people. “TMK pays great attention to workplace safety and strives to achieve zero injuries. We rank among the leading metallurgical enterprises globally for occupational health. The company is also committed to fostering the professional growth of its people, improving their skills through training programs run by the TMK2U Corporate University,” said Igor Korytko.

Mr. Korytko also spoke about how the company created has comprehensive ecosystems in the regions where it operates. TMK’s enterprises act as hubs for business support, education and social development, chiefly by purchasing more than a quarter of the materials and services necessary for production from SMEs.

“In doing this, TMK has long embedded sustainability across its operations. In this context, our strategic approaches do not need to be upended. That said, we do plan to make this work more systematic, and have already approved our ESG strategy concept to support this drive,” explained Igor Korytko.

The St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) has been held annually since 1997, and since 2006, it has been held under the auspices of the President of the Russian Federation, who has also attended each event. SPIEF has become a leading global platform for representatives of business to discuss the key economic issues facing Russia, emerging markets and the world more broadly. In line with tradition, in 2021, its business agenda was dedicated to the Russian and global economies, social issues and technological advances.
