TMK recognized as leader in sustainability among steelmakers by Expert magazine

TMK ranked seventh in the sustainability ranking of Russian companies compiled by Moscow-based Expert magazine, making it the best among Russian steelmakers.

The ranking included five measures of performance: financial performance, social policy and HR management, environmental performance of operations, contribution to social infrastructure development and charitable activities in regions of operation and SME engagement. TMK scored the most in local social and charitable contribution category, taking sixth place overall in that part of the survey.

“TMK enterprises are key employers and drivers of economic growth in the regions of our operations. Furthermore, they go beyond these roles by acting as hubs for local ecosystems as we build an elite talent pipeline through our own educational programs, support infrastructure and improve the environment. In 2019 alone, TMK invested about RUB 1.4 billion in environmental protection, social infrastructure support, charitable and social initiatives, culture and sports. This contributes to a favorable environment in the regions in which we operate and also to our partners’ confidence in our business,” said Igor Korytko, CEO of TMK.

Environmental protection is TMK’s top priority when upgrading production facilities. The Company spent RUB 160 billion on technological upgrades at its enterprises over 2006–2019, with RUB 17 billion of this amount invested into the plants’ environmental safety and protection programs. As a result, over the last five years, TMK has increased the average share of recycled water it uses to an average of 96% and reduced water consumption by 14% and discharge to water bodies by 32%. Total emissions were reduced by 22%, and the Company’s total waste generation by 40%.

TMK enterprises also support key social infrastructure by operating CHP plants, biological treatment plants and aeration and filter stations. These facilities are 70% focused on local community needs, supplying drinking water, central heating and hot water and treating industrial, sewage and storm water.

The Company has also taken to improve occupational safety: the injury rate across the Group has decreased threefold over the last five years. TMK’s comprehensive social programs cover, among other needs, vaccination and voluntary health insurance (VHI). Corporate education is another focus area: in 2019, about 80% of employees, or more than 27 thousand people, completed courses at TMK2U Corporate University.
