Annealing

Glossary

Annealing

The term 'annealing' means heat treatment ensuring balanced or near-balanced condition in the metal. First annealing involves heating a metal in an unstable condition resulting from prior treatment (except hardening; for instance, casting, pressure shaping, welding, machining) to make metal's condition more stable. Second annealing involves heating above the phase transition point, with subsequent slow cooling to obtain stable structural condition.
