Glossary

Quenching

Heat treating process involving heating above the phase transition point, holding, and subsequent relatively quick cooling, which enables inhibition of phase transitions linked to diffusion, to obtain structurally unstable alloy. Usually, cooling is performed in water, oil, polymer, or salt solutions, and sometimes in the air, depending on the alloy's composition.
